Calcium and Vitamin D Not Always the Answer

Calcium and Vitamin D are critical for healthy bones, and medical experts agree that you should get as much of these nutrients as possible from a good diet. Unfortunately, for most people diet alone is not enough, and they turn to vitamin supplements as a recourse. But the recommendations issued this week from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force call into question the value of calcium and Vitamin D supplementation. Echoing the advisory board, C.W. Randolph, Jr., M.D. and his medical team agree modest calcium and Vitamin D supplementation alone is not enough to prevent bone loss or rebuild bone. The clinicians at Dr. Randolph's Ageless and Wellness Medical Center promote a more comprehensive approach that has been clinically proven to successfully increase bone density in patients with bone loss.

Internationally recognized as an expert in optimal aging medicine, Dr. Randolph emphasizes the importance of addressing bone health holistically. "When it comes to bone health, there is no magic bullet.'" said Randolph, "As the advisory board concluded, taking a few pills a day is not always enough, so it is vital to address lifestyle issues such as diet and exercise because supplements are never a substitute for a healthy lifestyle."

Dr. Randolph and his team recommend patients do weight-bearing exercises such as tai chi or yoga, avoid tobacco and alcohol use, and eat plenty of calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, almonds, and broccoli. They also recommend a diet rich in good sources of Vitamin D, which the body needs in order to absorb calcium, found in fish, egg yolks, fortified milk, and sunshine. Nevertheless, it is often not possible to get an adequate dietary intake of the essential nutrients to support long-term bone health.

"Prescription medications are one option for treating loss of bone density," said Randolph, "but what many people do not know is that the most popular class of prescription medications used to treat osteoporosis, bisphosphonates, focus on limiting additional bone loss, rather than actually building more bone, in aging men and women. This class of drugs is also associated with potentially serious side effects, including heart arrhythmia."

Lori Ann Leaseburge, M.D. is another physician practicing in Dr. Randolph's Ageless and Wellness Medical Center. Drawing on her background as a registered dietician at Duke University Medical Center prior to attending medical school, Dr. Leaseburge addresses the controversy over the value of nutritional supplementation for bone health.

"I prefer to stay away from the prescription drugs when possible. Exercise and a healthy diet are non-negotiable but often are not enough, particularly for patients at risk of osteopenia (thinning of the bones) and osteoporosis (bone loss)," said Leaseburge. "Women are far more likely to develop osteopenia and osteoporosis than men. One reason is because loss of bone mass speeds up as hormonal changes take place in the decades leading up to and after menopause. At-risk women usually benefit from nutritional supplementation but calcium and vitamin D alone are usually not sufficient for measurable impact."

Dr. Leaseburge recommends a more comprehensive multi-mineral nutritional supplementation regimen (vitamins D and K, strontium, magnesium, calcium and a multi-vitamin) shown to prevent bone loss and stimulate bone growth while, also, reducing underlying risk factors associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. She says that repeat bone density scans provide clinical evidence that this more multi-spectrum approach has a more significant impact.

Both Drs. Randolph and Leaseburge agree that nutritional supplementation should not be hit or miss. They recommend women concerned about long-term bone health should work with their physicians, or medical professionals, to develop a more comprehensive strategy. Bone density scans can first determine the level of risk, says Randolph, then the physician and patient can work together to devise a bone health action plan always emphasizing diet and exercise and when appropriate, a comprehensive nutritional supplementation regimen which has been clinically shown to help improve bone density.

About C.W. Randolph, Jr., M.D.: Dr. Randolph is an internationally recognized expert in the field of bioidentical hormone replacement and anti-aging medicine. He is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Holistic Medicine. He is also a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Randolph's distinctive expertise derives from his training as a licensed compounding pharmacist specializing in pharmacognosy (plant-based medicines), combined with decades of experience as a trail-blazing physician. He coauthored three highly-acclaimed books: From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well (winner of the 2010 Bronze National Consumer Health Information Award), From Belly Fat to Belly Flat (now published in four languages), and In the Mood Again (Simon & Schuster, 2010).

Today Dr. Leaseburge practices at the Ageless and Wellness Medical Center with a strong clinical interest in nutrition and holistic health.

New Hope For Back Pain Sufferers With Circle Partnership

CircleBath's spinal surgeons are now offering back pain sufferers the option of Microdiscectomy Surgery, as a day case procedure with exceptional results.

Late last year, local arable farmer Mr Jeffery Coles, found himself the victim of acute back pain with numbness down his leg, known as sciatica, and left him unable to manage his farm. Mr Coles has a 15-year history of back pain which he previously managed with intermittent physiotherapy and pain killers when the pain was particularly bad. His lifestyle means he is constantly outdoors on the farm often involved in heavy lifting, bending, twisting as well as spending long periods on his feet.

After a visit to his GP, Mr Coles had more physiotherapy and saw an osteopath, however, his condition did not improve. He was referred to CircleBath's Spinal Unit by his GP, who diagnosed Mr Coles with a herniated disc requiring surgery. The spinal consultants at CircleBath were able to offer Mr Coles Microdiscectomy day case surgery where the procedure is done through a small incision, allowing the patient to go home just hours after surgery.

Microdiscectomy is not necessarily the right treatment for every form of back pain, however, as day case surgery it can be considered for a wide range of back problems including disk prolapse, chronic back pain and sciatica. "The procedure requires a one-inch incision in the back",explains one of the unit's surgeons, "And the operation is usually completed in less than two hours, allowing the patient to return home that evening".

"I was amazed with how well I felt after surgery and how quickly I was able to get back to life on the farm", said Mr Coles. "I was able to get back to everyday activities at about eight weeks and I was back on the farm at five months. I feel like a new man and my children no longer have to put my socks on as I can do it for myself!", he explains. Thesurgeon adds, "Patients who undergo day case spinal surgery are up on their feet and walking without much pain shortly after surgery". Recovery from this form of surgery is quicker and less painful than traditional methods asmuscles in the back are not cut during the operation.

CircleBath patients benefit from a multidisciplinary team approach, including an extensive and informative pre-operative assessment and a post-operative rehabilitation programme with the very best physiotherapy facilities.

Josh Fink Contemplates Problem with Sustainable Fishing

A new article from The Huffington Post sheds light on the difficulties that are associated with denoting sustainable seafood, or products that have come from industry-regulated practices. While more consumers are searching for this type of sustainable seafood, it has become difficult to determine exactly what type of products fall into this category, thus making sustainable shopping a challenge. Fisherman Josh Fink explains that consumers must become educated when purchasing seafood. He also notes that the industry must work to create a better way of denoting sustainable products from those that come from illegal practices.

The article explains that in a survey completed by NPR, 3,000 individuals offered their opinions on seafood labeling. The results showed that 80 percent of Americans felt it was "important" or "very important" that seafood was caught using sustainable methods. The survey defined the term sustainable as "still being plentiful for future generations, and caught using methods that did minimal harm to other animals in the sea."

The Marine Stewardship Council label is often how consumers determine whether a product is sustainable, but even this form of information can be misleading. The MSC label was awarded to McDonald's Alaskan Pollack, even though some reports indicate that Pollack stocks are only "moderately healthy" and suffer from declining numbers.

This ambiguous definition of sustainable seafood becomes problematic for consumers. Josh Fink offers his thoughts on the matter, "While many purchasers have good intentions when it comes to buying fish, it's often difficult to know exactly what you're buying. It becomes even more difficult when you have little to no knowledge about the industry. This is why those who purchase seafood regularly should take some time to understand the idea of sustainability, in order to make more educated purchasing choices. At the same time, the industry needs to work to create a standard, thus making it easy for consumers who are interested in supporting healthy fishing practices."

Though the industry lacks a unifying standard that works to define exactly what products fall into the category of "sustainable," some companies are taking action to promote legal practices. Whole Foods announced last year that it would stop selling unsustainable fish, using the MSC as a guide. Unfortunately, while companies like Wal-Mart have also tried to embrace sustainable seafood, this has actually become a negative for the industry. Critics explain that the MSC has lowered its standards regarding what is classified as sustainable in order to keep up with Wal-Mart's massive demands.

How to Make Your Christmas Card Stand Out

Chances are, at this point in December, holiday cards are starting to arrive on your doorstep in droves. What a merry time of year to open your mailbox to find greetings from all of your family, friends and colleagues rather than a bunch of junk mail and bills! Warm, cozy feelings aside, we can all relate to a shared disappointment of opening a card that turns out to be a generic, mass-produced card with no effort of personalization. You know its a bad sign if the most personalized part of the greeting card is the address label, said Joel Wishkovsky, co-founder and CEO of Card Gnome, an online greeting card company powered by independent artists.

Lets not forget how important sending a personalized note from the heart is during the holidays. Its an ideal time of year to touch base with long-distance relatives, old friends, and extended family to remind them how much they mean to you, said Wishkovsky. Its a missed opportunity and a waste of time, paper and money to send a generic card with no effort, thought or purpose put into it.

Card Gnome allows users to write a personalized note in every card before it is printed, stamped and sent via USPS. This means you can go beyond the informal, effortless Facebook wall posts and send a card that will be filled with meaning, shared special memories, inside jokes or a message of thanks. In addition to writing a custom note, here are five more personalization tips from the team at Card Gnome that will ensure your card is received with joy and isnt destined for the recycle bin next to fundraising letters and unwanted catalogs.

1)Give a card that makes a meaningful connection. Stores only offer a few hundred cards so you often have to settle for the best card available. Head to CardGnome.com where you can filter through thousands of cards and find the perfect connection.

2)Give to a charity by selecting a charitable card. Why not make a contribution to a charity while sending a greeting card at the same time? Two birds; one stone. Card Gnome is partnering with two non-profits to donate $1 for every card sold. The first is Blood:Water Mission that strives to help villages in Africa overcome HIV/AIDS and the water crisis. The second is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, an organization that provides mentorship services to at-risk youth.

3)Give a piece of home with a locally designed card. Send cards that were created by artists from your hometown. This is fun for friends and family that live nearby who will appreciate the local connection as well as for family members from out of town that can appreciate a card from where you live. Card Gnome has hundreds of independent artists from towns and cities across the United States for you to choose from.

4)Give your loved ones the giggles. Most people dont equate funny cards with Christmas or Hanukkah so sending a funny card will surely make them laugh. Card Gnome allows users to filter down their vast selection of holiday cards to uncover the funny ones. The company also has an explicit filter if youre feeling naughty over nice.

5)Give them a sense of nostalgia. Card Gnome also features a sentimental mood filter to easily find cards that feature beautiful artwork and photography as well as cards with uplifting messages for any family scenario.

New Card Gnome members that sign up with Facebook will receive their first card for free. First card trials at Card Gnome are available to everyone year round, which provides an all access experience. Card Gnome brings the convenience of a favorite card store, writing desk and local post office all in one place online. Looking for funny Christmas cards for women? CardGnome.com has a library of over 6,000 greeting cards for every occasion.
