PatientsLikeMe Unveils New Tool to Match Patients With Clinical Trials Worldwide

The U.S.-based patient network and real-time research platform PatientsLikeMe unveils its global clinical trials tool today at Europe's Healthcare Innovation Expo 2013, hosted by the National Health Service (NHS). The free tool, unveiled today by Research Director Paul Wicks Ph.D., draws on open data to match patients from around the globe with clinical trials based on their condition and location. The U.S. prototype was launched last year and has already helped thousands of patients find suitable clinical trials. The tool is available at http://www.patientslikeme.com/clinical_trials.
"Open data helps us accelerate the pace of research, and it's crucial we do everything possible to match patients to trials that might advance treatment and help them live better with their condition," says Wicks, a newly named TED Fellow and UK scientist. "We're excited to be at this year's Expo to learn what British and European healthcare innovation has in store for the NHS."
Last week, PatientsLikeMe Co-founder and Chairman Jamie Heywood spoke about innovative solutions to healthcare at the 2013 Nuffield Trust Health Policy Summit in London. Nuffield Trust is an independent source of evidence-based research and policy analysis for improving health care in the UK. Heywood returns to London tomorrow to speak on the Expo's Masterclass Stage about the importance of measurement in building a learning health system.
In his Nuffield speech, Heywood called for a "revolution in measurement," or what he calls "measurement-based medicine." He adds, "We should measure the severity of each condition and its impact on the patient. The measurement should support the patient in life choices, clinicians in care choices and researchers in learning what's effective. And every patient should be measured as part of the care process to the degree appropriate for the severity of their condition, so that their experience can be used to guide the next patient."
About PatientsLikeMe

46 Cancer Moms Help Their Children Feel "Normal" and Raise $1 Million in the Process

Nashville, TN, February 26, 2013 In May 2009, Miranda Beamer celebrated her fifth birthday. She was barely a year out of treatment for Ewings Sarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. As Miranda blew out her candles, her mom Tiffany Beamer set a goal to raise one million dollars for childhood cancer. Tiffany rallied Cancer Moms nationwide and formed 46 Mommas. 46 months later, on February 24, 2013, that goal was finally reached.

The number 46 is important, says Tiffany Beamer, the founder of the 46 Mommas team. Every week day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer; every year, 46 new mommas shave for the brave. Our children lose their hair by treatment, we lose ours by choice.

Officially, the mommas shave for the St. Baldricks Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research. Unofficially, they shave for their children, as each momma has been touched by the ravages of childhood cancer. Since the mommas inaugural shave in September 2010, 138 different cancer moms have shaved for the team, 46 at a time. By the end of this June, another 46 will shave, bringing the official tally of mommas to 184.

In the United States, more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. Of those, 20%, or about 2,500, lose their lives, making childhood cancer the number cause of death by disease for children and adolescents in America.

While most of the children lose their lives to cancer, some are victims of the treatments they go through, most of which were originally formulated in the 1970s. Until a few years ago, there had been no new drugs designed solely for the treatment of childhood cancer in more than 30 years. Those that do survive the treatment often suffer complications, even decades after the end of treatment.

About 46 Mommas
46 Mommas Shave for the Brave team is a grassroots group of women who have shaved their heads for St Baldricks to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. The group was started by Tiffany Beamer in 2009. The mommas shaved for the first time in September 2010. To date, 138 mommas have officially shaved for the team, with dozens more organizing events to help in their fundraising efforts.

The 2013 team of 46 Mommas will shave this year on June 30, 2013 at the Arneson River Walk Theater in San Antonio, Texas.

About St. Baldricks Foundation
The St. Baldricks Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St.Baldricks has awarded more than $103 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldricks funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials. Institutional Investor Releases Its 2013 All Europe Fixed-Income Research Team Survey Results

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 Institutional Investor has released the results of its 2013 All Europe Fixed Income Research Team survey. J.P. Morgan captures the top spot in the ranking for a third year running, while Barclays repeats at No. 2. Complete survey results can be found by visiting, http://bit.ly/12o7eMB.

Europes ongoing sovereign-debt crisis has driven demand for sell-side Investment research and helped fuel voter participation in this years survey. Nearly 800 investment professionals from some 380 buy-side institutions cast votes; those figures are up approximately 45 percent and 27 percent, respectively, from 2012.

Each of this years top five firms J.P. Morgan, Barclays, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley, respectively captures more total team positions this year than they did in 2012. Bank of America Merrill Lynch is the real standout; its team-position total more than doubled, from six to 13.

This years results also include two firms making their first appearance on the All-Europe Fixed-Income Research Team: Crdit Agricole Corporate Investment Bank (tied for No. 10) and UniCredit (No. 13).

The trend toward cross-asset-class investing has accelerated in the wake of the global financial meltdown, and several analysts who appear on this team also rank on its equity counterpart, the 2013 All-Europe Research Team, whose winners were announced last week, and can be found by visiting: http://bit.ly/iimagAERT.

Virginia Tech Expands Sports Concussion-Risk Studies to Include Hockey and Baseball

The Virginia Tech Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences is expanding its ground-breaking research of testing football helmets to reduce the number of concussions to now include hockey, baseball, softball, and lacrosse.

The five-year plan will see the Virginia Tech research center, headed by Stefan Duma, rate helmets worn by hockey, baseball, softball, and lacrosse athletes in their ability to lessen the likelihood of a concussion resulting from a violent head impact.

Ratings on hockey helmets are expected in fall 2013, followed by youth football in 2015, and then baseball, softball, and lacrosse in 2016. During that time, all ratings for adult and youth football helmets will continually be updated and released to the public.

The expansion into helmeted sports other than football comes on the heels of new research that allows for better prediction of sports-related concussions resulting from linear and rotational head accelerations. These accelerations result from head impacts that cause the head to translate and twist about the neck. The new research is published this month in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering.

(The peer-reviewed study is available online for free download from the journal.) http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-012-0731-0 The new research is being funded by Virginia Tech, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science at Virginia Tech.

New ratings for football helmets will include data for linear and rotational accelerations starting in 2015, said Duma, professor of biomedical engineering and department head of the Virginia Tech Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. Serving as lead author on the research paper is Steven Rowson, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech.

All head impacts result in both linear and rotational accelerations, and this publication provides the foundation for our research to address both accelerations relative to reducing the risk of concussion, said Duma. Our goal with the five-year plan is to provide manufacturers with a schedule detailing when we will release helmet ratings for each sport.

The helmet rating system is based on more than a decade of data collection by Duma and his research staff, and utilizes the STAR, or Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk, formula that assesses the ability of football helmets to reduce concussion risk. Sport-specific testing methodologies will be added to the website that lists the rated helmets prior to the initial release of each sports helmets ratings.

Using data collected from more than 63,000 head impacts during a period of 10 years, Duma and Rowson related linear and rotational head acceleration to the probability of sustaining a concussion in the form of an injury risk function.

This new analysis utilizes data measured from 62 concussions sustained by high school, college, and professional football players, said Rowson. We use these data to determine the best method to predict concussions when we test helmets in our laboratory.

In their research paper, the researchers write, With as many as 3.8 million sports-related concussions occurring annually in the United States and research suggesting possible long term neurodegenerative processes resulting from repetitive concussions, reducing the incidence of concussion in sports has become a public health priority.

Indeed, long-term, repetitive injuries that can cripple or eventually kill years after play have prompted dozens of headlines in major media outlets and several national studies, and even President Obama to recently weigh in on the subject. Dozens of former NFL players are suing the league over injuries sustained during years of play, and headlines were made this summer when former football great Alex Karras died at age 77 from various ailments, several allegedly said to be caused by years of hard hits.

In studying football-related injuries during the past decade, Duma and his research team have used on-field real-time sensors installed in the helmets of hundreds of adult and youth football players to study injuries, as well as a mechanical lab-tested 5-star rating system to track and grade commercially sold helmets.

The former can help indicate head injuries that require immediate attention while on the field of play. The latter has provided the only independent biomechanical data for consumers to make helmet purchasing decisions, Duma said.

Dumas goal is not to end the sport of football, but make it safer while still keep the same expected adrenaline rush and action for players, and viewers.

It is important to note that no helmet can prevent all concussions. The most effective strategies to reduce concussions in sports involve modifying league rules and player technique to limit exposure to head impacts, Duma said.

Beyond this, head impacts are a given in sport. Our research focuses on identifying helmets that reduce concussion risk so that athletes can make informed decisions based on independent data when purchasing equipment, which in turn, incentivizes helmet manufacturers to design helmets that better reduce head acceleration.

Debunking the July Effect: Surgery Date Has Little Impact on Outcome

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The July Effect -- the notion that the influx of new residents and fellows at teaching hospitals each July makes that the worse time of year to be a patient -- seems to be a myth, according to new Mayo Clinic research that examined nearly 1 million hospitalizations for patients undergoing spine surgery from 2001 to 2008. Among those going under the knife, researchers discovered that the month surgery occurred had an insignificant impact on patient outcomes.

In addition, no substantial July Effect was observed in higher-risk patients, those admitted for elective surgery or patients undergoing simple or complex spinal procedures. The research was published online Tuesday in Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

We hope that our findings will reassure patients that they are not at higher risk of medical complications if they undergo spinal surgery during July as compared to other times of the year, says study co-author Jennifer McDonald, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic radiologist. While we only looked at spinal surgeries, we think its likely wed find similar outcomes among other surgeries and procedures.

Researchers analyzed 2001 to 2008 data in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a large public database of information on hospitalized U.S. patients.

The researchers found that the incidents of all outcomes studied were higher in teaching hospitals, those with residents and fellows, than in nonteaching hospitals. In the teaching hospitals, minimally higher rates of postoperative infection and patient discharge to a long-term facility were found during July when compared with other months, but they were not high enough to establish a July Effect.

In-hospital deaths and postoperative complications did not differ according to the month of admission, the study found.

New Research Strengthens Connection between Oral and Overall Health, Says The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health

The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH) responds to recent research connecting oral inflammation and erectile dysfunction by encouraging further on-going research and stressing the importance of the oral-systemic health connection.

With each new study connecting oral inflammation with a host of life-threatening and life-altering diseases, we continue to see that oral-systemic health is a vital key to keeping our patients healthy and well, says Dr. Dan Sindelar, president of AAOSH. It is of great importance that these studies continue to find the latest connections between oral health and some of the most prevalent conditions that Americans face today.

The recent study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men with severe periodontal disease were more than three times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction that the men with healthy gums were. Head researchers concluded that periodontal disease should be considered a causative clinical condition of erectile dysfunction.

In addition, leading research continues to find connections between oral inflammation and degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimers disease and dementia as well as conditions like heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

This research adds to the mountain of evidence that oral inflammation doesnt just affect a patients mouth, but has a profound effect on his or her entire body, says Dr. Sindelar. The results of these studies are clear: We as dental professionals must continue to stay at the forefront of oral systemic health in order to optimize our patients overall health.

About AAOSH
The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health is an organization of health care leaders and health professionals dedicated to the relationship of oral health and whole body health. AAOSH membership includes and is open to health professionals from many allied health disciplines, corporate supporters and sponsors, health educators, and healthcare leaders. Understanding the emerging science-driven relationships between the mouth and the body, AAOSH promotes building closer ties between allied health professionals and improving interdisciplinary communication and professional referral relationships.

Men More Likely Than Women to Commit Scientific Fraud

January 22, 2013 (Bronx, NY) Male scientists are far more likely to commit fraud than females and the fraud occurs across the career spectrum, from trainees to senior faculty. The analysis of professional misconduct was co-led by a researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and was published today in the online journal mBio.

The fact that misconduct occurs across all stages of career development suggests that attention to ethical aspects of scientific conduct should not be limited to those in training, as is the current practice, said senior author Arturo Casadevall, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of microbiology & immunology and professor of medicine at Einstein, as well as editor-in-chief of mBio.

He added, Our other finding that males are overrepresented among those committing misconduct implies a gender difference we need to better understand in any effort to promote the integrity of research.

In a previous study, Dr. Casadevall found that misconduct is responsible for two-thirds of all retractions of scientific papers. The finding was unexpected, since earlier research had suggested that errors account for the majority of retracted scientific papers.

Researchers embarked on the current study to better understand those who are guilty of scientific fraud. They reviewed 228 individual cases of misconduct reported by the United States Office of Research Integrity (ORI) from 1994 through 2012. ORI promotes the responsible conduct of research and investigates charges of misconduct involving research supported by the Department of Health and Human Services.

An analysis determined that fraud was involved in 215 (94 percent) of the 228 cases reported by the ORI. Of these, 40 percent involved trainees, 32 percent involved faculty members, and 28 percent involved other research personnel (research scientists, technicians, study coordinators, and interviewers).

Overall, 65 percent of the fraud cases were committed by males, but the percentage varied among the academic ranks: 88 percent of faculty members who committed misconduct were male, compared with 69 percent of postdoctoral fellows, 58 percent of students, and 43 percent of other research personnel. In each career category, the proportion of males committing misconduct was greater than would have been predicted from the gender distribution of scientists. The gender difference was surprisingly large among faculty, said Dr. Casadevall, who also holds the Leo and Julia Forchheimer Chair in/of Microbiology & Immunology. Of the 72 faculty who committed fraud, just 9 were female one-third of the expected 27 if females had committed fraud at the same rate as males.

The study did not examine why men are more likely to commit fraud. One possibility is that misconduct is biologically driven. As research has shown, males tend to be risk takers, more so than females, and to commit fraud entails taking a risk, said Dr. Casadevall. It may also be that males are more competitive, or that women are more sensitive to the threat of sanctions. I think the best answer is that we dont know. Now that we have documented the problem, we can begin a serious discussion about what is going on and what can be done about it.

The researchers had hypothesized that the majority of cases of misconduct would involve trainees, who face intense pressure to publish a critical step toward obtaining research funds. But they found that misconduct was spread rather evenly across the career spectrum. You might think that as scientists go up the career ladder, they would feel more secure. But the bigger the lab you run, the more grants you need, which increases the pressures to publish and the temptation to cheat, said Dr. Casadevall.

While calling for more research to understand the motives for scientific misconduct, Dr. Casadevall recommends periodic ethics training for scientists at all levels of academia. Right now we target trainees for ethics training, he added. We dont do anything after they are hired. It might help if universities required refresher courses in ethics, as they do with courses to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. It wont stop all misconduct, but its one place to start.

The paper is titled "Males Are Overrepresented among Life Science Researchers Committing Scientific Misconduct. Additional authors are Ferric Fang, M.D., at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington, and Joan W. Bennett at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The authors report no conflict of interest.
