The Price of Dr. Allens Device Compares Favorably to BPH Medications Costs Declared in Recent JAAPA Survey, Highlights Fine Treatment

The article in JAAPA dated March 05, 2013, describes BPH medications available and their prices, for instance, Alpha blockers monthly cost for the starting dose on average $70 and 5-ARIs price for the starting dose on average $85 per month; whereas Dr. Allens device is one time purchase for about 150 US Dollars as the natural thermoelement lasts for approximately 1.5 years, Fine Treatment reveals.

The goals of BPH treatment include improvement of symptoms, lowering the risk of disease progression, improving QOL, and patient satisfaction, states the article LUTS: A practical guide to alleviating lower urinary tract symptoms, by Betty Larsen in JAAPA. However, Alpha blockers do not slow the progression of BPH or reduce the complication rate. The monthly cost for the starting dose varies from $16 to $123. Unlike alpha blockers, symptom relief from 5-ARIs can take weeks or even months. The variance in price for the starting dose is $40 to $130 per month.

Thus, the effectiveness of BPH medication is doubtful but their intake spreads for years.
Dr. Allens therapeutic device works all the time while it is applied to the body helping to reduce the prostate size naturally. Please watch a short informative video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5xidswhxJM.

BPH surgeries are costly too, for instance, according to Modern Medicine the cost of radical prostatectomy averaged $8,130 and accordingly to the Medical Tourism, the average cost of a TURP procedure in the USA is roughly between $5,000 and $6,000, and doesnt include the fees of the urologist or anesthesiologist.

At the same time prostate surgeries may harm as state messages on Mens-Health forum on Retrograde Ejaculation after Prostate Surgery, I was misled by my doctor in 2009. Expected one thing and was incontinent for 2 years after TURP. No warning from the doctor. No preparation. Impotency at times followed a few months after the surgery. No more ejaculation, dated 29 December 2011. Or another posted on 2 October 2011 another one says, I'm 44 male, 8 months ago I had Holap operation for BPH and still now I'm living a nightmare. Do not touch your prostate. The annoying symptoms you have now are nothing compared to what you have after surgery.

Fine Treatment gives men an opportunity to avoid side effects from the drugs and prevent the prostate removal procedures improving their QOL, says Dr. Allen. Men ought to use Dr. Allens therapeutic device as soon as BPH has been diagnosed as it is the most cost-effective prostate treatment with proven efficacy.

MSF Research Points to Ways to Expand Viral Load Testing for HIV in Developing Countries

ATLANTA At the 20th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Atlanta, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF) will present data today on strategies to reduce the costs and complexity of rolling out routine viral load monitoring in developing countries. Access to routine viral load monitoring will become increasingly important as WHO updates its HIV treatment guidelines and millions more people initiate earlier treatment.

Viral load monitoringa test that measures the amount of virus in a persons blood and thus the effectiveness of antiretroviral treatmentis critical in allowing treatment failure to be detected earlier, and ensuring that people receive the support they need to adhere to treatment, said Dr. Jennifer Cohn, medical coordinator for MSFs Access Campaign. Its a standard part of HIV disease management in developed countries but due to high costs and the lack of suitable technology, this type of virological monitoring is almost non-existent in developing countries. We need to challenge this state of affairs by ensuring there is financial and political support for roll-out of viral load in remote settings as a routine part of decentralized care.

Although the national guidelines in 15 out of the 16 countries where MSF has HIV projects recommend viral load monitoring, it is only widely available in two of these countries (Kenya and South Africa). The two main barriers to roll-out of viral load concern the cost of testing and the difficulties of sample collection and transport. In two studies to be presented at CROI from its projects in Thyolo, Malawi, MSF will show how viral load monitoring can be adapted for resource-limited settings by using novel technologies and strategies to address these barriers.

The first study looked at simplification. Instead of conducting a blood draw, which requires a nurse, MSF was able to acquire blood samples by performing a simple finger-prick in order to prepare dried blood spots, which were then transported to a laboratory with viral load testing capabilities. Because dried blood spots (DBS) are easy to prepare, extremely stable at room temperature, and can even be sent in the mail, the finger-prick method of collecting samples in conjunction with the practicality of using DBS helps to overcome the challenges of health worker shortages and lack of sophisticated sample transportation networks for blood-based samples. This makes access to viral load testing easier for patients in rural areas, who no longer need to travel long distances to reach facilities with testing capacity.

We were able to use some very simple techniques to overcome staffing, cost, and logistical constraints to get people in very remote communities the gold standard for monitoring HIV therapy, said Dr. Laura Trivio Duran, medical coordinator of MSFs project in Thyolo, Malawi. We have to keep trying these field-adapted solutions to ensure that the benefits of viral load monitoring reach as many patients as possible.

A second viral load study to be presented at CROI looked at overcoming cost barriers preventing routine viral load implementation. MSF evaluated the accuracy and cost-saving of pooling samples of dried blood spots compared to individual viral load testing in a rural district laboratory in Thyolo, Malawi. Pools of five patient samples were tested for viral load. If significant amounts of virus were detected in the pooled sample (either at a threshold of 1000 copies/mL or 5000 copies/mL), this meant there was replicating virus in at least one of the patients in the pooled sample, indicating treatment failure or non-adherence. Detectable virus in the pooled sample then triggered individual viral load testing for each of the patients in the pool.

Compared with individual testing, the pooling method means significantly fewer tests to screen. For the 220 study participants, pooling specimens instead of individual viral load testing could save between $2,023 to $4,011. When extrapolated to the viral load monitoring needs of the more than 30,000 people on antiretroviral treatment in Thyolo district, the savings are between $160,000 and $290,000 per year.

Viral load monitoring is still one of the best tools we have to stay one step ahead of this virus, said Sharonann Lynch, HIV policy advisor at MSFs Access Campaign. If were serious about reaching the enormous public health potential of expanded, earlier HIV treatment, viral load monitoring, along with enhanced adherence support, must become a standard part of treatment.

46 Cancer Moms Help Their Children Feel "Normal" and Raise $1 Million in the Process

Nashville, TN, February 26, 2013 In May 2009, Miranda Beamer celebrated her fifth birthday. She was barely a year out of treatment for Ewings Sarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. As Miranda blew out her candles, her mom Tiffany Beamer set a goal to raise one million dollars for childhood cancer. Tiffany rallied Cancer Moms nationwide and formed 46 Mommas. 46 months later, on February 24, 2013, that goal was finally reached.

The number 46 is important, says Tiffany Beamer, the founder of the 46 Mommas team. Every week day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer; every year, 46 new mommas shave for the brave. Our children lose their hair by treatment, we lose ours by choice.

Officially, the mommas shave for the St. Baldricks Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research. Unofficially, they shave for their children, as each momma has been touched by the ravages of childhood cancer. Since the mommas inaugural shave in September 2010, 138 different cancer moms have shaved for the team, 46 at a time. By the end of this June, another 46 will shave, bringing the official tally of mommas to 184.

In the United States, more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. Of those, 20%, or about 2,500, lose their lives, making childhood cancer the number cause of death by disease for children and adolescents in America.

While most of the children lose their lives to cancer, some are victims of the treatments they go through, most of which were originally formulated in the 1970s. Until a few years ago, there had been no new drugs designed solely for the treatment of childhood cancer in more than 30 years. Those that do survive the treatment often suffer complications, even decades after the end of treatment.

About 46 Mommas
46 Mommas Shave for the Brave team is a grassroots group of women who have shaved their heads for St Baldricks to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. The group was started by Tiffany Beamer in 2009. The mommas shaved for the first time in September 2010. To date, 138 mommas have officially shaved for the team, with dozens more organizing events to help in their fundraising efforts.

The 2013 team of 46 Mommas will shave this year on June 30, 2013 at the Arneson River Walk Theater in San Antonio, Texas.

About St. Baldricks Foundation
The St. Baldricks Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St.Baldricks has awarded more than $103 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldricks funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials.
