A 22-year-old woman took what her family believed was a routine prescription pain medication. The drug, a generic form of Darvocet, was supposed to help relieve pain before the woman had knee surgery. Instead, it killed her.

The young woman was found dead in her apartment eight days after taking the drug. The cause of her death was acute cardiac failure with evidence of pulmonary edema, also known as fluid buildup in her lungs. According to her parents, she had taken the medication as prescribed and had no history of heart problems or other medical troubles. Darvocet and its generic versions, however, had a history of safety concerns.[/url]

Despite the known problems with these drugs, a Supreme Court ruling prevented this family and many others from obtaining justice for loved ones who died after taking generic versions of the drug. Now, a case under consideration by the Supreme Court could further restrict the rights of those harmed by generic drugs and of their loved ones to file wrongful death lawsuits in the event of their death.

No Recourse For Victims Of Generic Drugs

Darvon and Darvocet are two related drugs that contain propoxyphene. Safety concerns about the drug had existed for decades. In 2010, these concerns culminated in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcing that the manufacturer had agreed to stop marketing the drugs in the U.S. The FDA urged the manufacturers of generic versions of the drugs to do the same.

Meanwhile, hundreds of individuals and families harmed by the dangerous medicine were filing lawsuits that accused drug manufacturers of not providing enough information about potentially deadly side effects. As the website Take Justice Back notes, some of those lawsuits were dismissed before the court system ever had a chance to decide whether the drugs had caused the patients harm. Specifically, the U.S. District Court that handled these cases dismissed claims in which the patient took only the generic form of Darvocet or Darvon.

Pliva V. Mensing

The reason was the U.S. Supreme Court case. In Pliva v. Mensing, the court held that generic drug manufacturers do not need to warn patients when they learn of new and dangerous side effects. It held that state laws regarding failures to warn directly conflicted with FDA rules for generic drugs, which require generics to be chemically equivalent to the brand-name drug and to have identical labeling. It does not matter if the manufacturer knew that the drugs were dangerous or potentially deadly.

In the aftermath of the ruling, the Patient Safety and Generic Labeling Act was introduced into Congress in 2012. The bill aimed to fix the inconsistency between how generic and brand-name manufacturers are held accountable, but Congress has not yet acted on this bill or other related legislation. Until the law changes, the court ruling in Pliva v. Mensing has the potential to leave people who have been harmed by generic drugs or lost a loved one as a result of adverse side effects without a remedy.

Will The Supreme Court Further Limit Rights?

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court recently heard arguments on another case that could affect the rights of people harmed by generic drugs. The case involves a woman who experienced severe side effects and permanent damage after she took a generic version of the anti-inflammatory drug sulindac. She sued the drug manufacturer, alleging that the drug was dangerous and defective. A trial court awarded her a $21 million verdict, and a lower appeals court upheld her verdict. The Supreme Court will decide whether to do the same in several months.

So many individuals today are struggling to make ends meet. Inflation simply has not caught up with the cost of living. As a result, consumers are getting creative to help reduce their monthly obligations. However, some of the tactics could prove problematic in the long run--particularly for those with vehicle loans.

Zero-interest credit card offers

One tactic specifically involves zero-interest credit card offers. As a way to entice consumers, companies are extending offers that include zero-interest credit card rates for balance transfers for a certain period of time. Some credit card companies are even allowing consumers to transfer any loan balance--including car loans.

And the marketing efforts have paid off; many consumers have taken advantage of the too-good-to-be-true proposal and are transferring their auto loans balances onto these credit cards.

The offer seems like a great financial move. However, there downsides to these great introductory zero-interest rates.

Problems associated with transferring debt onto a credit card

Typically, the offers only last for a short window of time. Many companies only offer this rate for a few months; other, more liberal companies, extend the offer to 18 months. But, once the window closes, a high interest rate typically takes effect.

In the short-term, consumers may save money by bypassing interest payments on the amounts they borrow. And, for those transferring auto loans balances, prevent the possibility of repossession.

However, in the long-run, they may end up paying more in interest than they would if they simply stuck with the original vehicle loan. By failing to pay off the transferred auto loan within the zero-interest introductory period they are stuck with a huge interest rate when the intro period ends.

Additionally, consumers transferring auto loan balances to credit cards actually hurt their credit scores. By transferring debt on to a credit card, they are trading "installment debt" for "revolving debt" which negatively affects their scores. This is because installment debt is traditionally secured debt and much less risky than revolving, unsecured debt like a credit card.

Considering bankruptcy

Financial experts recommend thinking through the decision before consumers take the leap. However, individuals struggling to pay off debt, like auto loans, credit card debt, or even medical bills should consider bankruptcy as an option. Bankruptcy can erase unsecured debt giving consumers struggling to make ends meet each month a fresh start.

Crowdfunding Expert Kendall Almerico, the CEO of ClickStartMe.com, recently reveals another secret to crowdfunding success in his latest video. In the recently released video available on ClickStartMes YouTube Channel, Almerico explains that crowdfunding projects built by a team of people, rather than one individual, have a greater chance of success.

Most people try to fund crowdfunding projects on their own, and many are successful, Almerico says. Taking the initiative and showing off your entrepreneurial spirit is all well and good, but building a team to help gives a greater chance at success.

Almerico notes that crowdfunding projects involving a team typically raise more money, and have a better chance of success faster than their individual counterparts. Given that crowdfunding projects are often primarily funded by friends, family and those within the creators sphere of influence, having a team means more friends, family and others to ask for donations, the crowdfunding guru points out. Logically, the more people involved with a project, the more people who can be approached about funding, and the greater likelihood of success.

From his latest video, here are Almericos five tips to building a good crowdfunding team:

1.Pick teammates with a large network. Who brings the most Facebook friends, Twitter followers and LinkedIn connections to the table? That person is a good teammate. Who has a large e-mail list they can blast out information to in a short period of time? Your new teammate, thats who.

2. Pick teammates who know how to use social media and who are online a lot. We all have a buddy with 2,000 Facebook friends who posts what he ate for breakfast every day and nobody cares, Almerico notes. That guy is probably not as good as the friend who has 500 Facebook friends, but they all engage in daily conversations with her. Almerico points out that a teammate with 10,000 Twitter followers who never tweets, is not as good as someone who has 500 Twitter followers and actively tweets, retweets and follows Twitter on her cell phone all day long.

3. Beware of overlapping networks. That friend who has the same Facebook friends as you is probably not the best teammate, at least, not in terms of broadening the network of possible supporters. Look for teammates who have new groups of people they can bring to the table, to supplement the networks already tapped.

4. Bring in teammates who will actually help. That woman with 500,000 Twitter followers who is a neighbors best friends mother-in-laws acquaintance? Is she a good crowdfunding teammate? Probably not, she is somehow engaged in the process. She may have access to a lot of people, but will she have any reason to help the project? Will she interact with her followers for the project, or just post something once (hopefully) and then ignore it? The best teammates are those who will work their contacts and follow up with them for the good of the project.

5.Create a game plan and stick to it. Teamwork involves everyone pulling their weight, and sticking to a plan. Before launching the crowdfunding project, divide up the responsibilities and get organized. Be sure everyone knows what they are supposed to do and when they are supposed to do it. Then, be sure to follow through with the game plan.

According to the report, baby boomers are not interested in selling their homes as they are now enjoying healthier and more active lives with more years of service. Due to this reason, economic experts from Scotia Banks have predicted lower housing turnovers and fewer sales in the listings.

This is one of the reasons older demographics preference is shifting from single family homes to condominiums in major centers.

Facts and figures from the Scotia banks real estate trend report indicate that over 70 percent of the Canadians over the age of 75 are home owners. This is almost the same as the home ownership ratio in population aged 35 to 44, the demographic that previously had the highest home ownership ratio. As for moving, the report shows that only 20 percent of senior Canadians are likely to move in the period of five years.

In this aspect, Metro News also published an article that clearly states that the demographically induced sell-off will not be fueled by the aging population in the future. While we can predict that seniors are not likely to sell their homes in the future, it is still not clear whether they will be a part of the home buying demographic or not. Of course, the mortgage rates are low and baby boomers are still earning well, Mr. Arkan concluded.

Physicians for Peace Resource Mothers Program Receives Fleece Blanket Donation

Physicians for Peace Resource Mothers Program received a donation of fleece blankets from Crooked Brook.

The Resource Mothers Program is modeled on a Virginia-based initiative to improve the health of expectant and new mothers and their babies to empower women in deprived and underserved neighborhoods in the developing world. These resource mothers serve as mentors to at-risk pregnant women and their babies to decrease the rate of infant mortality and low birth weight babies in developing countries. The program was launched in November 2005 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic as "Madres Tutelares" and has seen the births of hundreds of healthy newborns.

Resource Mothers help young mothers receive the appropriate prenatal and pediatric care to ensure a healthy baby, minimize health risks to the expecting mother, and decrease the rate of infant mortality in developing countries. In doing so, these Resource Mothers help pregnant women and their families access social services and community resources. Over time, the resource mothers and their clients build trusting and supportive relationships and continue ensuring the women have information on parenting, nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Fleece blankets are made from Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or other synthetic fibers and can be made out of recycled PET bottles, or even recycled fleece. They are lightweight, warm, soft, and hydrophobic, holding less than 1% of their weight in water which allows them to retain much of their insulating powers even when wet.
