Webinar Coming Soon - Greener Sanitizing with Renewable Cleaning


The Renewable Cleaning group is presenting a Summer 2013 webinar on Greener Sanitizing with Renewable Cleaning - an event focused on explaining the process and value of cleaning surfaces using water and proven tools to make the indoor environment measurably clean, sanitized and - in some cases - disinfected.

Poor Sleep Linked to PTSD After Heart Attack

NEW YORK Clinicians have long speculated that poor sleep may be a mechanism involved in the higher risk of further cardiac events or death among those with post-traumatic stress disorder following a heart attack, but the association between PTSD and sleep after a heart event has been unknown.

Recent data from Columbia University Medical Center researchers have shown that symptoms of PTSD after a heart attack are relatively common. A PLOS ONE study (published in June 2012) found that 1 in 8 heart attack survivors suffer PTSD and that survivors with PTSD have a doubled risk of having another cardiac event or of dying within one to three years, compared with survivors without PTSD.

A paper published in the current issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine, by Jonathan A. Shaffer, PhD, and colleagues at Columbias Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health, reports on an analysis of the association of PTSD and sleep in nearly 200 patients who had experienced a heart attack within the previous month, recruited from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. The studythe first of its kindfound that PTSD following a heart attack is associated with poor sleep.

The results showed that the more heart attack-induced PTSD symptoms patients reported, the worse their overall self-reported sleep was in the month following their heart attack. Greater PTSD symptoms following a heart attack were associated with worse sleep quality, shorter sleep duration, more sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medications, and daytime dysfunction due to poor sleep the night before.

The data also showed that people with poor sleep following a heart attack were more likely to be female and to have higher body mass index and more symptoms of depression; they were less likely to be Hispanic.

Dr. Shaffer and colleagues hypothesize that the strong association between heart attack-induced PTSD and sleep may be due to the fact that disturbed sleep is a standard characteristic of PTSD. Results of recent treatment studies for PTSD and sleep disturbance suggest that the two conditions should be viewed as comorbid, rather than one being merely a symptom of the other.

In addition, dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system responsible for regulating involuntary bodily functions, such as breathing, heartbeat, and digestive processes), which is associated with both PTSD and disrupted sleep, may represent a common mechanism underlying their association.

Further research is needed to better understand the associations of PTSD due to heart attack, poor sleep, and risk for future heart attacks.

The paper is titled, Association of Acute Coronary Syndrome-Induced Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms with Self-Reported Sleep. The other authors are Ian M. Kronish, MD, MPH; Matthew Burg, PhD; Lynn Clemow, PhD; and Donald Edmondson, PhD. All are members of the Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health at Columbia University Medical Center.

Hoboken International Film Festival ("HIFF") - with all its Academy Award and Emmy winner and nominee attendees and cutting edge movies - kicks off May 31st, but not in New Jersey. The Garden State lost its largest film festival to the Hudson Valley of New York. HIFF's new home is the historic Paramount Theater - a 1,100 seat, renovated 1930 breathtaking landmark - in Middletown.

This year's festival boasts over 140 movies, culled from over 1,500 submissions, and promises to deliver numerous talked about, cutting edge films. Case in point: the Opening Night Feature Film, Scavenger Killers, an insane serial killer/horror film about a charming judge and gorgeous criminal defense attorney who go on a murdering rampage, starring three Oscar nominees - Eric Roberts, Charles Durning, and Robert Loggia. Or Gary Null's liberty-minded War on Health, FDA's Cult of Tyranny, a documentary which tackles the abuses of the federal government and the pharmaceutical/corporate food giants against the smaller manufacturers of important supplements, foods and herbs. Then there's How Sweet It Is, the mob musical starring Paul Sorvino, Michael Pare, Erica Christensen, and Joe Piscopo. And people will really be talking, and perhaps very offended, after they watch National Lampoon's newest anti-PC flick, Another Dirty Movie, which is having its worldwide premiere at HIFF on June 1. Another Dirty Movie, starring Jonathan Silverman, Robert Klein, and Dann Florek and a bevy of Playmate-type women delivers one insulting joke after another - it definitely doesn't hold back.

"We have a rich history of screening movies that make people think and talk," said HIFF Chairman Kenneth Del Vecchio, who is also a critically acclaimed filmmaker who has written/directed/produced over 20 star-filled movies, a best-selling author (novels and legal books), and a former judge who recently signed a deal for a network judge show to rival Judge Judy. "We want our audiences to be the first to see many of these movies that other festivals don't have the courage to show. We want to entertain. We want to develop and promulgate ideas. And we want to be a hot bed for the perpetuation of the First Amendment. I accept movies that I ideologically agree with - and I also accept movies that I totally disagree with. It's free speech, intellectual discourse, fun and excitement that we offer at Hoboken International Film Festival. If you're interested in that, come on down to the Paramount. If not, stay home and drink warm milk."

After months of being courted by several New Jersey and New York municipalities, HIFF chose Middletown. A turning point in the deliberations came when Del Vecchio received a letter from U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, urging him to move the festival to the Paramount; Del Vecchio decided to do so. In February, the pair held a press conference with Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano and then the preparations began for "Hoboken New York-style."

idcloak Launches Proxy Web Browser for Blocked Facebook Users


This week idcloak Technologies releases a list of IP port proxies for third-party access to Facebook in countries where the site is blocked. When IP proxies are used for the unblocking process, a user faces none of the site compatibility problems associated with regular proxy sites. Gill-Chris Welles, senior tech writer at idcloak Technologies, explains how a user may apply IP Port proxies to create a proxy web browser and what the benefits of doing so are.

When a user takes an IP address and port number from the list and adds it to the network settings of their browser, all HTTP activity from that point forward is routed to a new global location. If that location is outside a users national borders, they will be able to bypass any censorship governing their countrys connections. There are already many proxy sites online, which run the unblocking through the page, but they fail to unblock sites like Facebook because of their complex coding. The advantage of IP proxies is you dont have those compatibility issues; all elements of Facebook work exactly as they should.

This latest release is particularly important for idcloak, a Dallas-based web services firm that promotes freedom and anonymity online, since the company sees Facebook as an important instrument for social change. In Egypt and Tunisia, Facebook and Twitter were used to organize 9 out of 10 protests during the Arab Spring uprisings. The efforts of government censors to block or track down activists would have succeeded if it werent for Facebook login proxy services that could effectively parse the sites code. And with the amount of choice thats available nowadays in proxy technology, a censor would need to completely cut their country off from the internet just to shut down one social media site.
